May Reviews

Here is what I consumed in May. If you want a reminder of how I give out my star rankings, you can read all about it here.

Movies / TV Shows

David (4/5)

I enjoyed this one, it has a good sound track and kept me watching. I was surprised about how little I knew about David’s story. The David and Goliath scenes are pretty early in the movie so the rest was a nice surprise.

How messy was my house?

It was a movie so there is only so much damage that it could cause. I was engaged and had my snacks ready to go.

How was my attention span?

I watched the film, I didn’t get side tracked as it held my attention.

Where and when was I watching?

This was part of our family movie night. The kids had seen it already and wanted us to watch it with them.

The Wrong Paris (4/5)

Oh my gosh this one was fun. Was it ridiculous? Yes. Did I love every minute of it? Also yes. This one doesn’t take itself too seriously and has every rom-com trope out there. I liked that it was predictable but also not. I knew the ultimate ending but it took a surprising path to get there.

How messy was my house?

I was only going to watch for a few minutes and then do the dishes… well that didn’t happen. I was hooked.

How was my attention span?

I have no idea what the rest of the family was up to, I was glued to the screen.

Where and when was I watching?

I watched this on my phone when the kids had taken over the TV and I wanted something fun to watch. This one delivered.

The Secret World of Arrietty (4/5)

This was a rewatch and I enjoyed it just as much as the other times I have watched it. A beautifully illustrated tale that the whole family will enjoy.

How messy was my house?

Not too much damage could be done as it was a planned movie night.

How was my attention span?

I watched the movie in one sitting and enjoyed it.

Where and when was I watching?

This was the kids choice (which was excellent pick) for family movie night.

Daredevil Born Again - Season 2 (4/5)

I was glad to see a season 2, especially as Jessica Jones was back.

How messy was my house?

My husband watched this one with me which meant it was limited to date night. That meant it took us way too long to finish the season. That said during date night, no cleaning happened.

How was my attention span?

When it was on, I was watching. I wanted to pay attention to all the details.

Where and when was I watching?

Unfortunately it was limited to date night, I would have liked to have binged it a bit faster.

MAID (4/5)

I loved this mini series but also had a really hard time watching it. Our hero sure has to go through some things over the course of the show. It does a beautiful job in showing how abuse doesn’t always look a certain way and how hard it can be to start over.

How messy was my house?

Things might have been neglected while I watched this. Suffice to say I didn’t do much cleaning even when I told myself I would.

How was my attention span?

This one sticks with you even when you are not watching it.

Where and when was I watching?

I watched this one on my own so had a bit more flexibility than I usually do. I watched it faster than intended when I figured I would just “check out one episode”.

Books

The Friday Night Knitting Club- Kate Jacobs (3/5)

I enjoyed the stories of the different women and it went in a direction I wasn’t expecting. If you enjoy knitting and/or stories about women coming together over a bonded experience, then you might enjoy this one.

How messy was my house?

It stayed about as messy as it usually is. While the book was enjoyable, it didn’t pull me out of my routines.

How was my attention span?

I enjoyed this one when I was listening to it. If you asked me about what I was reading I might mention it.

Where and when was I reading?

I listened to this as an audio book so it got me through some chores.

Throne of Glass- Sarah J. Maas (3/5)

This was alright, I definitely enjoyed it more than “The Assassin’s Blade”. There seems to have been a number of books that came out around the same time that feature a female in some sort of trial or competition. This isn’t the worst one I have read but there are better examples out there. I have heard from a few people that this series gets really good but it takes a few books to get there. I enjoyed this enough that I will continue to read it.

How messy was my house?

I enjoyed this one but was able to keep up on my house chores while reading it.

How was my attention span?

If you want to talk about it, I am happy to oblige but the conversation might turn to how much more I enjoyed “A Court of Thorns and Roses”.

Where and when was I reading?

This book stayed on my nightstand so that I could enjoy it at night before bed.

State of Wonder- Ann Patchett (3/5)

I enjoyed this one. I knew almost nothing about it so went in blind, which was fun. I don’t know much about the jungle so it was cool to learn about the different tribes and what research would look like. I was very happy to be at home. I’m not sure the jungle is something I desire to see that close and personal (from a tour boat, count me in, living with the tribes… not so much).

How messy was my house?

I listened to this as an audio book so did it while doing some light chores.

How was my attention span?

I got distracted easily and then had to rewind. I’m learning that audio books only work when I have something that doesn’t require much thinking. I enjoyed it while I was listening.

Where and when was I reading?

I had a physical copy of the book but listened entirely to the audio book.

The Dark Lord’s Guide to Dating (and other war crimes)- Tiffany Hunt (4/5)

This one was a ton of fun! One of my friends enjoyed it and once I saw the title I just knew I needed to read it. It didn’t disappoint. I really loved the banter between the two leads and the world that was created was just so fun! Unfortunately the sequel is not at our library so I will have to track it down another way.

How messy was my house?

I definitely neglected a few chores while reading this book. I just needed to know what was going to happen.

How was my attention span?

I was able to come up for air but really didn’t want to take a break.

Where and when was I reading?

The book sat mostly on my nightstand but did travel around the house with me on days where I had some flexibility with my time.

Role Model - Rachel Reid (5/5)

I am obsessed! This book was so fun, I read it in 24 hours. I just couldn’t put it down.

How messy was my house?

My house was fine, as long as you didn’t come into it. For 24 hours I neglected everything I could. Once I finished the book, I had a lot of cleaning to catch up on.

How was my attention span?

As long as Troy, Harris, Shane and/or Ilya were mentioned, I was great. If you wanted to talk to me about something else it was likely I was trying to read under the table.

Where and when was I reading?

This book may as well have been attached to my body. It followed me around from the moment I picked it up, until I finished it.

What did you think?

I would love to hear from you, have you seen or read any of the books, Movies or TV shows that I shared this month? Do you have any recommendations that I should read or watch?
